We run into this as a "problem" in model railroading. Trying to get good electrical contact with the wheels of a scale locomotive. The real thing weighs 400 tons and the damned model isn't heavy enough to get traction. Of course if as I was doing, you model in N-scale (1:160) it's really a pain. that 400 ton locomotive scales down to 3 1/8 ounces!

I've seen it described as a cubed relationship so 800lbs to the 1/3 power: 9.08 pounds. Either way, a lot less than one would think.

Re: LIGHTENING - Worth While?

Gee Guys … It looks like I came up with a good topic to ‘DISCUSS’ not argue over.

At the this point – I dare say the general conclusion is that lighter is better IF it can be done in an intelligent way.

That being – without compromising the structural integrity of the AC. This in itself is an art-form which has seen the rise of a lot of Fibreglass AC as well as some interesting designs and modifications.

Also we have to consider that the prototypes of our models were hand made and once perfected they went into production with minimal consideration for the quality of the wood being used. (cheap labour on the assembly line and profit margins!)

Which is why it has been said (and I agree) that you should hand pick your wood for your build.

Second choice – trim away any unnecessary excess to reduce the weight and use Carbon Fibre where required for strength. (Trev’s area of expertise )

Without a doubt the old saying of “It’s Built like a Brick Outhouse and Flies like a Brick Outhouse” rings true.

So it would seem that IT IS BETTER TO BUILD LIGHTER! (just don’t go too crazy over it)

Thanks for all of the input!
Life is either a daring adventure...
...or nothing.
