Aviation Design - Scorpion

I just wanted to show a few pictures of a new project in my workshop This is Peter Woo's Aviation Design Scorpion that he did a sweet paint job on

It's got a Kingtech 140 in it. Most of the components are installed - my task will be to set this up and we need to get this flying ASAP

Any suggestions on set-up / programming would be appreciated!!

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion

The factory settings for throws are pretty good.

The one lesson I learned the hard way on mine was the factory cg is wrong. I think Altecare have updated the instructions but the cg needs to be balanced the same as an Elan. With the UAT full, the jet should sit back back on its tail if you pull the nose up, but stay on its nose wheel if you put it on all three gear. Gives a really nice flight trim and the nose will stay up when you land and you can wheelie down the runway. If the cg is too far forward the nose will drop in the flare and you will end up in the death bounce.

If you have been following the threads on RCU about the new Scorpion, the dealer rep (Olnico)is talking about building a full bypass system that will also fit the old jet. I highly recommend this as the jet is really draggy and a 140 will push it around at about 140. Oli claims the drag is due to the large intakes and all the turbulence in the fuse and a bypass will fix it.

Nice lookin paint job on that thing.

So now that you've built an Elan, you're doing jet builds huh.

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion

I got everything together as far as I did in November of last year and because of work have walked passed that jet at least 20 times a day waiting to finish it. I am so lucky to get Trevor to set it up for me. Thanks for all your help Trevor.

Hi Paul If you ever met Trevor you would not have any worries of letting him do anything . He researches everything and test everything. You should see what he does and his test procedures on a new engine . His ability and passion is off the grid .

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion

LOL!!! Yep... Trying to dabble in the jet builds now. I've always been fascinated with jets but was also always scared of them. Having messed around with the Élan assembly, I've learned soo, soo much in the past 4 weeks on set-up and tricks that all you PROs do!!

Peter has about 6 big beauties all requiring set-up and his paint skilz are off the chart (wait until I show the Ultra-Lightening and Bandit paint jobs!!!!!)

I also have a scale project of my own about to soon start, so in pretty deep now, LOL!!

All in the name of Kero-fumes, LOL!!

PS... Paul... Thanks for the advice on balance and throws! Peter mentioned that to me so I'm glad his comments were echo'd by your experience!! That bypass system sounds cool!

Re: Aviation Design - Scorpion

Nice timing on this!
I've been bugging Peter for pics of his because I have one of the new V2 scorpions myself.
I got the Swiss scheme but am giving it a repaint (hopefully color and clear on it this week if the masks arrive). Most of the install has been worked out so once the paint is on I suspect about a week or so to get it RTF. Same power as Peter is using.
Keep posting?
Cheers, Sean
