You should swap out the ignition module with a known-good unit to be certain. If the trouble clears you can either try to get a warranty replacement module or try the spark plug cap replacement kit from Thunderbolt RC...it includes the resistor. The problem you described is exactly what I experienced earlier this year, which turned out to be a burned out resistor in the cap. When you test the resistor with an ohm meter, it will test open.

Good luck with it...

Re: DLE 20 Problem

I'm with Trumpetman. My bet it is the module too as was the case with mine. You described the exact same thing as when I had my issues, but mine was still on the ground...luckily. It'll be a warranty thing.

Oh, make sure it doesn't see more than 6v. I'm using a Tech-Aero IBEC now too.

Re: DLE 20 Problem

OK Guys;
I opened up the Spark Plug Cap and tested the resistor - it was a 1k Ohm resistor (20% tolerance) that measured up at 985 Ohms - certainly within Specs.

I Cleaned the fuel filter - there was minor crud.

I fired the engine back up and had rough and inconsistant running. I have sent a letter off to TB - but as I have had this engine waiting for a Plane on the shelf for a while I doubt that I have any warranty left.

I am thinking of going to HK for a replacement module - first I have to check with the local guys to see if there are any spares about...

I have looked at a bunch of different modules on line - does anyone know if there is a good better best on these things? Or do they all come from the same factory with a different label on them?

Which do you recommend for the DLE 20?

Re: DLE 20 Problem

I just Spoke to ThunderBolt and explained my situation - he was able to pull up my file in no time and ... you guessed it... the warranty had expired.

However; we discussed the problem, what I had done etc and the possible solutions. At the end of the tale a NEW RCEXL module is in the mail and I will be testing it out next week! (or whenever Canada Post can get it to me )

You just have to admire a company that supports the Hobby and their Customers!

I'll be back to shop again!

Re: DLE 20 Problem

Jeff at Thunderbolt is a stand-up guy. I'm a happy repeat customer.

As for the resistor in the cap, I was having a problem with my DA-50 not long ago and someone suggested I replace the resistor. I checked in with DA about it and they were definitely not in favour of the procedure.
