For sure.

In the preliminary rounds, Curtis beat Scott in two rounds and Scott beat Curtis in two rounds. In fact in round 3, Scott almost took first. In that round, Ito scored 253.0 points and Scott scored 251.5 points. That 1.5 point difference means in 9 maneuvers scored by tree judges for a total of 27 counted scores, only three somewhere gave Ito 1/2 point more then Scott. Curtis far behind in this round at 233.5 and Ennio with 234.00.

In all three of the finals round, there are 10 judges and the two highest scores are dropped, as are the two lowest scores, the points of the remaining 6 judges are counted for each maneuver. So in all each maneuver can get a maximum of 60 points instead of 30, as in the preliminaries.

In round 1, Curtis scored 470.0 and Scott 469.5. Only 1/2 points out of 6 judges scoring 10 maneuvers!!! Can't get any closer then that. In round two, they tied at 480.0 each. And in round three, Curtis scored a 480.5 and Scott again a very close 477.5. Each maneuver may have been scored 1/2 point less by any one of the judges. All in all, this was extremely close.

Actually, considering the top four, if the two in third and fourth place could have had better winds in two of the final rounds then the pilots in first and second place, either of the 3rd or 4th place guys could have ended up in first or second. That is how close this championship really was.

Re: F3C World Helicopter Championships

Thanks Phil for your insight into the FAI F3C championships.

Seems like Mother Nature had a hand in determining the final outcome. I wonder if FBL helis will level the playing field??
