I live 35 minutes north of the border and have RC and automotive stuff shipped to a US address fairly often. USPS postage is usually way less than Canada Post, parts from Rock Auto are sometimes 10-20% of the cost in Canada, etc. It's all about comparing costs and availability.

Always bring your bill of sale. Canada customs can refuse you to bring the item back if they're in a bad mood. If you want to take the risk of cheating or not declaring, be warned that if caught, Canada customs can make you walk home with nothing (including your vehicle).

So far I've only paid duty on vehicles. For items less than $100, they usually wave me through, otherwise I get charged HST.

Canada customs does NOT charge HST for shipping within the US!!! They used to, but it was fought and has been officially changed. If they still charge you HST on shipping, you should be able to appeal it and win.

Re: Crossing the border

Canada Customs DID charge me hst on US shipping and no matter how hard I argued, he would not relent. That was this September. Please advise what section I quote to appeal as you advise.
