Dope over Solartex???

I am finishing off a 1/4 Balsa USA SE5a and I am trying to decide how to cover it. The latest issue of MAN has a great article about finishing off Koverall and on the back page is a profile of Brian Perkins Bristol that is covered in Solartex. Lots of good resources for both procedures.

Originally is was torn between Koverall and Solartex but I am starting like Solartex better, lots of reviews about how it is easy to use and goes around corners well. However the thing that confused me is this. In the MAN article, Brian's Bristol is covered in Solartex and then doped 8 times and finally coloured dope is sprayed on. If you are using Solartex, why would you also want / need to dope it? Does it give a better appearance? Does it blend in the scale effects?

For my scale effects, I am planning to do some wing and fuselage stitching. There are also roundels and markings. For the markings should I iron on a different colour of Solartex or paint them?

Sorry if this is a bit rambling, I have never worked with any of these coverings before and it all a bit of a learning curve.

Re: Dope over Solartex???

I've used solartex in the past and it is great stuff. It is also pre painted and therefore not the lightest covering method out there! If you are using a gas motor I would cover with the solartex and then spray latex paint for the final color. No need to give it eight coats of dope before the color coat IMHO. Latex fumes won't kill you, you can get it mixed to your colors at Home Depot (Behr exterior latex) and no primer is needed. If you are running a nitro motor you will need to use a fuel proof paint as nitro fuel will dissolve latex paint. This BUSA Supercub was painted with latex (over Koverall) and has a very nice scale looking finish including rib stitching and rib tapes etc.
