I buy it here at the local Bumper to Bumper outlet, it is in stick form, already fluxed. It is not cheap, but it works well for soldering clevis ends on or for landing gear work. The only problem I have encountered is in trying to store it,as the flux tends to fall off very easily.I keep it in a cardboard tube and try not to handle it too much.
Hope this helps,Gerry

Re: Silver-solder substitution

I used silver solder when I ran a small motor business. There are two types of silver solder, soft and hard. The soft, like Staybrite, you can use with an ordinary soldering iron as it has a low% of silver. Good for landing gear assy, etc as its stronger than ordinary solder. By the way, if you use the acid flux from the silver solder you can use it with lead solder too, if you don't need the strength as in the pushrod ends and melts at a little lower heat. Just make sure you wash off the acid under a tap to prevent corrosion. Also make sure it's solid solder wire, and not fluxcore as they conflict with one another. Also as you can tell, not to be used on circuit boards because of the corosion.
The hard silver solder is one step below brass brazing. Takes a torch to melt it so it's not good for piano wire landing gear as it'll take the temper out of the wire with the heat. Great for ex systems though. Works well on gas tanks too because of the extra strength over solder.Should be able to get both types of solder at a welding supply store.
Hope this helps a bit
Tried for my kamikazi pilots licence. Flunked the test.
