Pinned rudders are a lot of fun and a great idea for storage. Even if you have a full size truck box now, you might be rolling in a little Volkswagen one day.

Removing the pins on existing hinges is pretty simple. Just cut the mushroom end of with a sharp knife and push them out. They are aluminum so not too tough.
Here is a picture showing the L shaped wire diameter is .052 I think with the end sharpened to guide through the hinges easily.
I had also made another where the wire exited the top of the rudder and could be pulled without removing the tailwheel. A hole was drilled inside a screw and the wire glued inside. A piece of tape could hold down a L piece on top of the rudder much simpler though.

Re: Replacement Hinges

Don't use the pocket hinges and the dubros or flat hinges can be a PINA if you are removing the surface on a consistent basis.

I put a removable rudder on my EF YAk 110. You can actually buy Robart hinges without the pins in them in two different sizes.

I don't recall the actual thickness of the music wire but there is a perfect match for the larger hinges. Just slides out and it takes 2 seconds.

Another thing to consider is running the wire from the bottom like some mentioned if your rudder is not drilled from the top already. If you want pictures shoot me a pm with your email. Before the trailer I had to do this every time I flew.
