Rudimentary Question

A couple of years ago I bought a SlipStream Beaver. Really liked how it flew. The Beaver is one of the planes where it isn't real difficult to find technical drawings. This model was scale in every regard except the horizontal stab.

Now a couple years later my interests have changed. Looking into the IMAC rules I discovered they require "Proof of Scale". This rule seems to not be enforced to the letter, but......

Unlike the Beaver a plane like a Extra 300 has pretty limited technical specs anywhere on line. I did manage to find a site that gave me some rudimentary measurements. Things like: wing span, overall length, track, height, and wing area are there.

To start off this thread I'd like to discuss the term "Overall Length". OAL for short, where is this measured? The Beaver specs showed the plane measured from the hinge line between the Vertical stabilizer and the back of the prop. Or does OAL mean tip of spinner to back of the rudder along the datum line?

Re: Rudimentary Question

Are you talking about drawings that show "0" (zero) as the back of the prop and the last identified station as the rudder hinge line?

If so, an airplane manufacturer can place Datum ("0") anywhere they like as it is just a reference point to idnetify the position of everything on the plane. Some have Datum a few inches or more out in "space" ahead of the plane.

Also, if the last identified measurement is the rudder hinge line, that would make sense as the last Fuselage Station. Anything aft of that could be identified as Rudder Station.

But to determine OAL I would say that you need to add the amount of distance the spinner is ahead of Datum and the amount of Rudder that is Aft of the last Fuselage Station.

Re: Rudimentary Question

Thanks for your input. Guess I was reading plans incorrectly for the last 30 years!

Anyway I found what I was looking for in Andy Lennon's book.
