SPAD glider build?

Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
I'm thinking of making a SPAD glider this winter and wonder if anyone has tried before, what the results were. I know the weight will be a killer, plastic's heavier than balsa or foam, but it's worth a try.

Can I get a 2m wingspan that can break down for transport?
What should I use as a model/plan/something to copy? Simple remember.
Anything to avoid re:diehdral, polyhedral?

Thanks for any sailplane help, now to copy this over to the spad side of the forum.

Re: SPAD glider build?

I think it would work for a sloper, saw a few of those in the past on the net. For thermal, weight is your biggest issue and drag. You can build easily a flat bottom airfoil with decent dihedral or better, a polyhedral wing with stick like fuse. The tail, with all the open corrugations to me seems pretty draggy. Also the thick trailing edge on the wing, unless you can cut it to one layer. Overall weight would have to work out to under 12oz or it will not thermal too well but it will glide above that. I do not think 2m is big enough for that material but my experience is very limited to one plane, not a glider, quite a while ago.

Re: SPAD glider build?

I'll chime in here and confirm what Dan is saying, there is little likelyhood that you would achieve any flight success using that material to construct a 2 meter thermal glider. It is simply too heavy and structurally weak to yield a decent wing loading and efficiency that is required.
There are slope gliders that are made with corrugated plastic sheet, but they fly in high lift slope lift where durability and material cheapness are the dominant priorities and higher wing loading works to advantage.
If you are going to the effort and expense of building a 2 meter glider, I suggest you use more traditional materials and even better, purchase a kit of a proven design. With some care and adherence to assembly instructions, you will achieve success with this approach, something that we all wish to see.
