Quick Maintenance Question

This might be a bit of a newbie question, but occasionally I get one wheel that locks when you tighten the wheel nut. If I back off the torque a bit the wheel will spin freely, but I know it should not be like that. I should be able to torque it down tight like the other wheels and still have the wheel spin freely.

I can't figure out what is wrong with the setup. Bearings are good, everything seems to be in order.

Anyone know why it does that?

Re: Quick Maintenance Question

Is the wheel nut somehow contacting the outer race of the bearing rather than just the inner one? Can you put a washer with a smaller outside diameter under the nut so it just contacts the inner race and pinches that one tight allowing the outer one and the wheel to spin freely?

Or is it a driven wheel? Dow you need to do something similar to keep the axle bearings inside the hub from being pinched on the outer race?

One setup I have the hex-nut that the wheel goes on to is tapered inside and tightening it down locks it onto the tapered axle. I put washers between the hex and the hub to take up the slack so the axle does not wobble in the hub. But if I put too many washers the hex will contact the hub before it tightens on the taper and make the axle lock up.

Re: Quick Maintenance Question

I had the same problem, and it was the plastic hex that was wore out in where the pin goes through the axle shaft, when you tighten the wheel nut it pushes the hex into the bearing carrier and locks the wheel up. swap it with another hex and see if that helps.

Re: Quick Maintenance Question

Some great suggestions guys, thanks, I will try and see if it is a wearing issue with the wheel or hex nut. The hex nut is aluminum so Im surprised if it is that, however, it could be the wheel. I'll be eventually upgrading this truck to aluminum rims, but at $65 a pair, not including new tires... ouch. I will also play around with washers if I do not have a convenient replacement hex nut right now.
