FEJ F-14 build

Last spring I got a phone call from a buddy saying I have something you would love to get your hands on , Knowing that I shouldn't go over two weeks later I did, only to bring it home. The F-14 is (I think) the most complex jet , its a twin and swing wing and seemingly a little more to set up to fly then most. I found time this week to get back to work on my FEJ F-14 as most of the "Jet Guys" now know FEJ "New Honey Comb" has been over used and in the wrong spot's mainly in spar's and hard point. Tail feathers blowing off , servo tray coming loose and wing failing load testing (subject here) just to name a few, I have already torn the tail feathers apart (stabs and rudders) and finish the "up grades" there but the biggest bump to get over would be the wings, After cutting into the wings and removing the H/C (Honey Comb) spars and not removing the aluminum wing pin block (keep alinement) to see what I could do. The spars were bolted to the aluminum pin block by four small bolt, that was it. And the spar had cut outs into it for the ribs to intersect right at the block beside the bolt,a "NO NO" this spot is where the failed wings have broke. My plan was to make this wing "Bullet Proof". Here what I have started.

Re: FEJ F-14 build

Its a shame to have to do this level of rework to an airframe marketed as an ARF, but knowing the mfg's history I commend your efforts. It's very responsible of you!
The upside is these fly well from what I've seen at a few events so when done you'll have more confidence than most. Keep posting!

Re: FEJ F-14 build

Incredible to think FEJ expected 4 bolts going through what might as well be called a cardboard box, to hold the entire weight of the wings with loads they must endure.

Just seeing the ply and CF you have installed makes it look SO much stronger.

Good job Maddog. I hope you intend to get rid of the Direct Drive for the elevators and massively re-enforce the elevator shaft blocks and fuse area.

Re: FEJ F-14 build

Wow couldn't believe how weak wing structure is made in those wings, I agree with you and others on here by commanding you the steps you took to fix the most critical issue in those wings, love how you fixed the problem with actual wood with Carbonfiber to give it structural strength it needed. Lots of good work going into your model, it will be bullet proof when it leaves your hanger for it first flight....

Re: FEJ F-14 build

Nice work Brad!

It makes my head spin every time I see one of these FEJ planes cut open. I can't believe they would go to the effort of producing the model and not put the proper structures in it. It wouldn't cost them anymore to do it right!

Re: FEJ F-14 build

Well I couldn't agree more with all the comments. What a scary thought having that bird fly by a crowd with those spars. Nice work Brad!

IMHO the skin will carry a significant part of the load, primarily in torsion so a good bond there will make it bulletproof but looking at the work so far you have that well covered

Put me down for the maiden for sure on this one.

With all the new birds this year maybe we should plan an annual spring "Maiden Flight" weekend at Wingham.
