Thanks for taking the time to post.
This has given me a leap forward as to positioning the batteries for CG etc.
That plywood support will also tie in the frame members.
I was planning on a removable canopy, held by pining one end and magnets on the forward portion...but that would involve building, fitting a frame for the plastic canopy...and a lot of time... still may pursue that thought.
I'm still hours away from that decision.
Retirement does bring a lot of time.
Thanks again
Rick

Re: Canadair CL-415 build

No problem Rick

The build is pretty much done now and I am planning on test flying the plane soon. On the other hand, I am considering installing some retractable landing gear that I would have to scratch built...could be interesting. I will keep you posted with some pics of the maiden.

Re: Canadair CL-415 build

The CL-415 finally saw the water...

The plane was easy to get on the step but I had to increase the power very smoothly to maintain directional control. Only 3/4 throttle was required to get airborne actually. Quite a bit of torque with the big four blade prop which tends to make the left float to dig a little in the water. It would have been a good thing if I could have installed counter rotating props but still it was manageable.

Re: Canadair CL-415 build

Yes I got it airborne but just briefly as I was worried that the battery might be getting low and I was not sure if there was water infiltration from all the take off runs.

Re: Canadair CL-415 build

The flight was going well until I found that rolling right was somewhat difficult so I got a little nervous and precipitated the landing... After a few bumps it nosed down in the water and then it flipped on its back. There was not too much damage but I will need to make a new canopy and replace the sleeve for the wing tube as it was made of cardboard. I will make a new one out of fiberglass.

The recovery was somewhat of an adventure as I had a small inflatable boat that I had to blow in a hurry and then I lost one of the oars on my way to the plane ...who would have tough that plastic oars don't float...
