What ever happened to using newsprint for the pages? I thought that was a cost saving method years ago but now we are back to glossy for every page which must be costly. Are we able to go back to that or is it not worth it?

Re: MAAC Magazine

MAC Magazine made the move to gloss paper probably about four or five years ago, and combined with other changes the increase in cost wasn't significant. (Changes included less space 'guaranteed' for zones and committees and a reduction to 80 pages from 96.)

The Board felt the increased quality and reproduction was worth the changes. It was interesting that this change came about when looking at the viability of printing separate English and French language editions. (Which worked out to be significantly more expensive)

MAAC can absolutely move back to significant levels of newsprint if they want to, I'm not sure that is the right move. (readability is increased with sheet-fed gloss, something of concern to a significant portion of MAAC members)

Re: MAAC Magazine

I personally would prefer to receive a PDF version of the newsletter and the option to go online and download it rather than have it mailed.

I wonder how many members would prefer an electronic option rather than hard copy mailing? It could be one checkbox added to the membership/renewal form. That would certainly give you an indication.

Re: MAAC Magazine

Digital copy is fine by me. The sooner the better. I do enjoy the magazine though and seeing what other areas of the country are doing.

Re: MAAC Magazine

I would latch on to digital. All company and professional newsletters I receive now are in digital form, utility bills too.

Re: MAAC Magazine

And what about the guys who would prefer hard copy. I enjoy mine I read it where ever and leave it for others to enjoy. It’s even brought a few new members to MAAC by leaving it in conspicuous places.

How do the guys who do not have computer access keep up with what’s going on and receive notice of MAAC business like zone and annual meetings, changes in policy or safety etc. There is a legal obligation of the organization to make contact with all members. The magazine fills this need.

I imagine a majority of the cost is in the editing of the magazines contents which would still be there even if it were to go digital. Producing a limited amount of magazines most likely is about the same cost as full production. 14,000 or so editions are not a ground swell and most likely on its own as a subscription service would not be self sustainable.

I had two subscriptions to home machining and to model engine building magazines. Even at 8 to 10 dollars an issue the number of subscribers made it a struggle for the editor to continue. When they decided to go digital they lost so many subscribers one has folded and the other barely hangs on. I used to like to collect the editions for my library I no longer subscribe to the remaining one as printed paper doesn’t add to my library like the magazines did. I moved on to other subscriptions.

I like mine in the mail, it gets paged through more times than I can count, online I likely wouldn't pay much attention to it at all.

I found years ago when I would have 2 or 3 full pages of advertising in Model Aviation Canada I would have guys asking for stuff that was advertised sometimes 2 or even three issues back....this would never happen with an online issue.

In my opinion as a former advertiser, if the publication went to online only, advertising would die overnight...what would be the point?
