Improving plastic pilots

A plastic/resin pilot bust came along with an ARF I recently acquired, and after one look at the staring eyes and absolute panic on the guy's face, I figured if he was going to stick around, some changes were going to be necessary.

I had remembered reading somewhere a tip on Williams Bros pilots that gave them more life by cutting off the head and swivelling it some so the guy wasn't staring straight ahead all the while. So bandsaw and silicon glue, and it was done, and already an improvement.

Casting about the web I came across the excellent painting info on the Aces of Iron website. It's in a pdf and you can download it from here:

A little while killing the garish colours, redefining the features and he looks considerably better. Very easy to do, they explain how in great detail, and well worth the effort. He now looks like he belongs in the plane, and knows what he's doing!

Give it a whirl, it's a good way to get a reasonably non-toylike pilot from a HobbyKing type guy that cost less than $5.
