Mitsubushi Zero by Dave Platt

30 years ago RCM magazine published a 1/5 scale Zero build article by Dave Platt. At that time I copied the article and ordered that plan, along the way I gathered a Yellow Aircraft Zero cowl and canopy, the plan stayed in the stuff cupboard until now.
Although the article shows a A6M5 Zero, I think I will built the A6M3 Mocel 32 version with the clipped wing tips, probably in the grey naval paint scheme, I found a photo of scale competitor Jeff Foley with this same model back in the early 90'.

If you have are planning to build this Platt model, please join in. In the past couple of years a few 1/5 scale version have appeared, World Models, Top Flite, CMP, but the Platt version brings back a lot of memories. Plus the 79" ws fits in my truck.

Last year I ordered the main landing gear legs from Hobby King.

With this years late spring, I'm now cutting out the parts for the Zero, a off and on warbird project for those rainy days.

Re: Mitsubushi Zero by Dave Platt

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Zero. At the time of its design, it was an engineering marvel much more advanced than anything out there.

I remember the Platt article in RCM. I am going to enjoy following this thread

Re: Mitsubushi Zero by Dave Platt

I was just on Dave Platt's site, and chatted with him, ordered a spinner and supercharger intake for my Platt 109. Was looking at the Zero. I'll certainly be watching this thread.

Re: Mitsubushi Zero by Dave Platt

Coincidentally, on another forum, there is the start of another A6M3 build, of Platt's. You might want to check out the link: http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/....asp?TID=21873
You will need to register your name, at no cost to be able to read the thread, he is using the same magazine I believe.
I will be following closely with interest, as I am also building a Zero, but it is the Yellow Aircraft kit with some modifications.

If you need any reference material, I may be able to guide you to books etc.

Have fun with the build, apparently these are great flying aircraft.

Thank-you, I did check out the link on RCSB, uncanny how we started thread within a week of each other.
Do you have a build thread on your YA Zero.

"from RCSB ...By the way, I have a spare gun hood, tail cone and clear canopy for the Platt Zero should the need arise, I elected to go with the Yellow Aircraft kit instead."

I'm interested in buy those Platt Zero parts off you if you wish to sell.

cheers - ken

Re: Mitsubushi Zero by Dave Platt

its been a while but I got all the wood parts cut today, right now I'm doing repairs and maintenance on the existing warbird fleet, I'll start on the stab later this spring.

Sadly we lost Bill Swindell "CdnFLyer" to cancer this winter. Bill sold me his Platt Zero fiberglass parts and canopy and had an excellent build thread on his Yellow Aircraft Zero on RCSB.
cheers - ken
