I have at least a dozen A123 packs, most of them from Thunderbolt. Some are getting on 5 years old. Never had an issue. Test them every year for a 90% capacity minimum and have yet to have a a failure. I do only charge them at 1C but other then that don't do anything special.
I've only ever wanted 1 more plane.....at a time

The NiCD / NiMH trick might work ... believe the warnings! The weather is nice so do it outside.

Find a friend with a compatible charger.

Good luck!

It actually works quite nicely, I don't think I charged for more than a few minutes.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but two Wrights will make an airplane.

Re: A123 (LifePo4) Battery issues

I also bought two batteries from Jeff at Thunderbolt back in March. They were brand new, never touched since March. After selling them recently the buyer wanted me to charge before shipping them. I too had one dead cell on one battery. The one cell was reading 3.32V and the other one 1.93V. Then I put the pack on an old Ace R/C expanded scale voltmeter that has a setting for 5 cell (nicads), as soon as a load of either 300 or 500ma was put on the pack, the meter needs immediately moved from around 5.5v to the red (unsafe to use) zone. That battery would not accept a charge on the LiFe setting on my 308 icharger so I isolated the balance plug pins and introduced a .1C (250mah) charge just to that cell. But that didn't work and now I get a 0 volt reading on that cell.

I contacted Jeff and are hoping that there is still Warranty on them.

Do you guy know what kind of shelf life do these have?

Is it possible to have one discharge over 5 months.

Friend of mine purchased 2 Life Battery packs this spring from Thunderbolt and one is completely dead and won't accept charge and the other is questionable. We have contacted Thunderbolt with these issues.

Wondering if anyone else has had problems with these batteries.
Mike, just curious, what charger are you using on these batts?

I've had good luck with those batteries, and have 3 packs of 2500mah A123's that track each other very well.

Re: A123 (LifePo4) Battery issues

I bought 2 LiFe's from LHS in the spring, an 1100 for ignition and a 2200 for flight pack..After 1 day at the field I put them on charge, and when the 1100 beeped as full, I looked at the 2200 screen and it was at 1950. Stop!

Put it on the discharge program and it stopped at 900 taken out. Put back on charge and had to manually stop at 1900 again. LHS replaced it..
Karma always wins!
