Floats: Built the second float and what a ordeal. Plans are way out of whack, the bottom view and side view don't match. I suggest building from the side view as it seems the most accurate... I used a Ernst water rudder and put a larger rudder on it. Not sure if i need it but will go with the plans. I Installed a mini servo in the aft end of the float to retract the rudder during landings and take offs. Also ran a rod forward to the nose gear steering servo. it all worked well will see once in the water. To seal the retracts so water doesn't leak into the float I coated the retract cyl with oil and installed the retract into the float., I then but Goop around the retract cyl and let it cure. I pulled the retract out and now I have a pretty good seal.....I hope. Hope the picture explains it better. Going to paint all the joints with epoxy and try to make each compartment water tight as high as I can, cause you know they will be a leak somewhere.

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario

I have been fiberglassing the floats using heavy cloth on the bottom to give more strength and 3/4 0z for the rest of the float. I also been overlapping the seams to give it more strength.

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario

Got it up on it's feet today. Make sure you have lots of boxes for support while postioning the gear wire. The plan template for bending the wire was kinda close. Really hard to find the specs on mounting the floats . fuselage is +3 degrees and the floats set at zero. Float step is about 1 in aft of the C of G. I set the floats 27 in apart center to center, you won't find that on the plans. It all kinda worked out okay but it was a challenge.

Re: Beaver Fever in Southern Ontario

Hey Mike,

Build is looking good!

I see you're fairly far into the strut installation but you might want to consider this set:

http://www.horizonhobby.com/float-st...30cc-han454512

Not sure what scale your plane is and how much you would have to modify them to work but the hardware supplied is top notch and relatively cheap.

Here's a video of my Hangar 9 - there's some close-ups of the floats starting around 2:15

Cheers,

PaulD

DA100 and cowl mounted today, nothing difficult there. Bolted the engine on and it came in around 2 degrees down thrust. Got lucky. At first glance the fiberglass cowl looks like good qaulity. Started sanding it and it is full of pin holes.
