Cannot believe I'm still able to fly this late in December. I've been out to the flying field with the H9 Spitfire every weekend this month, I get 3 to 5 flights in each weekend day. Back in November the FG36 started to cough after 5 minutes into flight. I narrowed the problem down to warm air being sucked into the carb. I solved the problem by adding a small air dam to the leading edge of the warm air outlet in the cowl. The engine is dialed in for maximum performance now and the H9 Spitfire looks, sounds and flys great. It's a pleasure to fly with a fully functional, reliable FG36 fitted in a beautiful H9 Spitfire

Re: H9 30cc Spitfire & FG36 Saito

There must be a flaw in the Saito FG-36 & FG-40 muffler?

I was flying my H9 30cc Spitfire on the weekend, the first flight after resetting the valve tappet clearances. Five minutes into a 12 minute flight the exhaust tone changed. There was a slight change in power and the engine exhaust noise sounded better with more of a growl, not overly loud. I landed the Spitfire and returned to the pits. I checked the muffler, the exhaust end plug was completely missing, just the body and the manifold remained intact.

I checked Horizon Hobby web site for a replacement but the muffler for the FG-36 & 40, it's listed as back ordered. That is why I believe the muffler has a flaw! No stock usually means an item wanted by more buyers than the estimated number of mufflers needed to be held in stock.
