Anyone have a 1/18th ECX near Chatham?

My nephew's ECX Ruckus is having an issue with range (it only works about 25 ft away). We got it at Christmas time so Horizon's not being very helpful right now with offering any replacement parts. It hasn't been abused, he just didn't use it a lot so we discovered it late. My son's similar Dromida will do 2-3x that range so we figure something's up with the Ruckus.
What Horizon has suggested for troubleshooting makes sense but I don't have any equipment to do it. They feel it could be either the radio or the receiver/ESC. Their suggestion is to bind this truck to another ECX 1/18th radio and vice versa for his radio. Unfortunately, the local hobby shop doesn't have a demo unit and I don't know anyone else with one. It's a proprietary receiver/ESC. I tried binding to my Dromida radio (they looked like the same FlySky provider) but it didn't work so I presume they have some kind of lock from the manufacturer.
In short, does someone have an ECX 1/18th (not the Smash as I believe the radio is different) Torment or Ruckus in the Chatham area? If so would you be willing to meet up with my brother-in-law and try binding them to your equipment so they can troubleshoot which part we need to pick up?
Current models: Hobbico Nexstar Electric, Parkzone Spitfire Mk IX , several micros/small helis. Nothing nitro/gas.
