Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

I've already run the servo wires for aileron servos in the lower wing. Haven't decided on the top wing yet. Dual elevator servos, and a pull-pull rudder cable setup, so should handle quite well.

Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

I've heard that the 160 twin four-stroke is a perfect fit, and great powerplant for the airplane. I'm going gas, looking at an RCGF 20cc, because I have one, and it's a perfect fit. I'll test fly without the cowl, I want to get the fibreglass specialties cowl anyways, and see how it flys with that. I've got 3 of them, one on a Goldberg Sukhoi, unlimited vertical, another on a TF Corsair, and it flies scale on 1/4 - 1/3rd throttle, so hoping it will give a nice scale amount of power for the WACO.

Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

Well, got some more work done on the WACO! Most of the forward fuse sheeting is done, as well as the balsa blocks for the nose installed, and sanded to shape. All four ailerons are now built as well. Not sure about the plastic parts that are supposed to be attached, to give the scalloped look, have to think on those for a bit.

Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

Finally, some photos. Had to do a lot of thinking, as mentioned, about the plastic aileron parts, but found a great colour scheme, so I can use the plastic, and paint gloss white to match the covering. That's a relief!

Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

Shots of the work on the front end. Plan is to mount the engine to a thicker firewall, which will then bolt onto the fuse front. This saves a lot of reworking of the fuselage internal structure, in order to allow access to the fuel tank.

Re: PICA 1/5th WACO

One thing I didn't like, is how the tail surfaces are done. Leading and trailing edges are simply the 1/8th sheet, with ribs on either side. Not a lot of surface area for attaching covering, and after looking at a lot of photos, I'm not convinced it would look at all right. So, out came the windex, and some thin strips, a bit of sanding, and voila, edges all around. I did put a bit of extra balsa in as well on the elevators, rudder, and vertical stab, to ensure enough surface area for the monokote hinges, and covering.
