Hi, I was wondering what could be the best way to store batteries for extended period. Room temp on a shelf, cool in the frig, in the freezer... what you guys do?

Re: Battery storage

I use the Storage cycle on my charger for my li-po's and that brings their capacity to approx 60%. I then store in my fire proof box on a shelf in my basement. Have batteries with over 200 cycles (5 years old) on them and still going strong so this seems to work for me.

Re: Battery storage

I store my NIMH batteries that are in planes with a full charge over the winter. Then in the spring I'll run one cycle through them and fly. My loose ones get a cycle every year if I don't use them. I keep all my NIMH batteries fully charged. Floyd

Re: Battery storage

The Battery University website has lots of good information on maintaining different battery chemistries.

Here is their page on how capacity of lipos is affected by various factors:
I store my lipos "cool" in the fridge and, for long term storage - over the winter - at about 3.75v, which is just under 40% capacity.

Here is their page on storage of batteries of different chemistries:

I've learnt that batteries of different chemistries not only have different performance characteristics but different maintenance protocols; it's worthwhile to be aware of the different maintenance routines as they have consequences for shelf life, capacity, safety or sometimes just not taking unnecessary steps such as imposing the lipo protocol of having a 'storage voltage' on nicads.

good luck,
