HA HA Dave...."Viking Funeral"...LOL

Does doculam shrink?

So here are some updates...Its been a busy weekend for me, so I haven't had much time to post.

First- the soaking test on the elevator went well. A little patience was all that was needed. First try only let the stringers come loose. The bigger pieces still held fast. Here is a shot of the tail with a few stringers loose. But get a load of all the white splotches all over the tail. That is white glue that was invisible on the finished tail before I soaked it.

So I just let it soak a little longer. It took a while to finally soak the glue soft enough that the pieces would come apart. I also was able to "rub off" gloppy glie blobs that were coating all the pieces of the elevator. Once all apart and extra glue wiped off each of the pieces, I set all the pieces aside to let them dry. This is going to work

Meanwhile, I laid out all the the ribs. They are all there except one wing tip.

But damn, quality is CRAP. I cant remember if these kits were that bad when I was a kid, or maybe the quality of the tooling has been degrading over the years. I don’t think a kid today would stand a chance building one of these, given the shoddy quality in this kit.

I am going to sort through the scrap pile 1 more time to see if I cant find the wing-tip.

Re: Stick-and-Tissue to indoor electric RC Project #2

You probably saved an ounce, just removing all that glue! Sheesh.

Can say for those kits, but I still recall pretty vividly building the Guillow's Corsair when I was a kid. Even though I received a couple of other Guillow's kits after that, my experience with that first one was enough to leave the others in the box!

Re: Stick-and-Tissue to indoor electric RC Project #2

So, sorting through the scrap piles of lefover die-cut sheets looking for that missing wing-tip, I found this:

Oh BOY!!! This is not a good sign....LOL

If there is a spare fuselage former here in the die-cut sheet scraps......

...then what the hell is in the fuselage??? The fuselage is already built.

Well, it looks like I found the missing wing-tip. I guess it kinda looked like a former when the kid built it. I think this fuselage will have to be completely undone. Looking at it closely now, It looks awful. None of the former's are straight and I will need to get that wingtip out of there. Plus glue encrustation everywhere

So it looks like the fuselage is going into the soak bucket next.

BACK TO KIT FORM!!

LOL

Re: Stick-and-Tissue to indoor electric RC Project #2

LOL.. That poor fuselage looks so pitiful.

I have to remind myself that I decided to build this plane because it has been languishing for years in a half built state. I decided to go with this project because I felt sorry for this little plane. Well, it definitely needs a lot of TLC.

It would have been easier (and faster) to build the Heinkel because it was NIB. This corsair needs to be taken down before I can start building it.

Okay
Time for the fuselage to get the water treatment.
First I had to find a bigger container. The white tub I used to soak the tail feathers is too small for the fuselage.

I have a storage container that has removable yellow containers. I yanked them all out and found that the corsair fuselage fits in it nicely

The nice part is, it has a closing lid. This is helpful because the fuselage wants to float up out of the water. So I filled the container to the brim, then I put a sponge on top of the fuselage and then closed the lid. The sponge presses up against the lid and keeps the fuselage under water.

Now we wait for the soaking to take effect.

Re: Stick-and-Tissue to indoor electric RC Project #2

OMG!!! There was so much glue on the fuselage, WORSE than what I saw on the elevator.

Here is a shot of the fuse abut 1/2 way into the soak, about an hour ago. It's covered in glue!!

The stringers were soft enough that I could start lifting them off.
but the formers wouldn't budge. The glue was so thick in the joints that it still did not soften all the way through.

I had to resort to using a dental pick to start scraping away the layers of glue to expose the harder glue underneath.

Here, after much scraping and soaking, you can see some of the formers have come loose. Others are still stuck fast. I am picking away at the glue with the dental pick.

Here is an example of how much glue is coming up from the glue joints. Tons!!!!

After a scraped off as much as I could, I put the entire fuselage back under water to give it more time to soak the newly exposed glue. I guess I'll go back to work on the new nose for my tissue cub while I wait.

Wow.

If it's any consolation, this is giving a boost to my confidence in my own building skills.

Just... wow.

Re: Stick-and-Tissue to indoor electric RC Project #2

My neighbors got a couple of these kits over at his house, I think 2 are in half built states and one in the box.

I think I'll check em out tomorrow and see if I can twist his arm into selling me one

You've got me excited on wanting to do one myself for indoors max

Cool! Find out what they are. Have you got any guts lying around?

As I am learning and building, I realise there are 2 classes for indoor; 1 cell size and 2 cell size. My cubby runs on a 1S battery using an all-in-one board and motor combo I salvaged from an ultra-micro 4Site. The corsair, I am afraid, may be too big for 1 cell and will probably have to fly on a 2 cell pack. I think I have a 2S all in one board somewhere that I bought in Toledo a couple of years ago. I'll have to find it. Otherwise I will have to use a micro reciever, ultra-micro servos and a micro ESC. Obviously a 2S all-in-one would be eaiser to work with and lighter.
CF105 mentions peanut scale- I now agree that would be better for 1S packs from salvaged vapors or embers
The larger than 20"ws stick and tissue (like my corsair) will probably have to go with 2S batteries. But is guess it also depends on how heavy the plane gets when it is all finished.
