Hello Scott

If you visit New Zealand let me know, as they have lots of aviation museums as well as true flying aircraft. I spend the better part of two months traveling the islands in search of aviation related sites. Had the opportunity to fly in a Tiger Moth and visit an amazing replicator of aircraft parts for the Tiger Moth.

Cheers Don

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

A little progress. I have finished mounting the L wing servo, cap strips and wing bolt hard points. When I attach the servo mounts to the hatch I always like to put in a small screw to firm up the mount. I sheeted the area where the strut attachment rod comes down through the wing. I use the supplied large Klett hinges. I remove the pin and the slide a single piece of wire through all three hinges. The hinge line is perfect! This L panel is almost done! I will make the pushrod and mount the control horn. I use Robart control horns, a good solid connection with NO play. Servos are Hitec 645MG.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

I have started to build the stab horizontal stab and vertical fin. Standard balsa construction. I will use small carbon rod as doweling at critical junction points. I also intend to make the tail assembly removable so I can adjust the incidence and make transport a little easier.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Man, I missed the comment about the Vogelsang gear unit, assuming that's the Vogelsang that used to appear on all the RC Modeler videos, from the 80's and 90s, that always showed up with huge, and unique projects? Quite the builder. After visiting the Rheinbeck Aerodrome last year, I really want a 1/3rd Albatross. Uber sexy machine!

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

I've seen several videos of a 1/3 DVII with the Vogelsang G62 gear drive......AWESOME!

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Completed both elevators halves this weekend. I have always thought that the tail surfaces on WW1 models are flimsy at best. To improve this I have drilled small holes and inserted carbon fiber rod as "pin" at all major joints. I used thin CA afterwards. The tips are all laminated with 4 pieces to get the desired thickness. I use normal wood glue here as they will need sanding afterwards.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Started the hinging last night. I decided to go with the large Robart hinges as they will give a more scale look to the stab elevator assembly. I block the elevator side before drilling. Once I'm done drilling I harden the hole with thin CA.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Rudder was simple laminated construction. I will hinge this later once the fuse is done. Again I pinned all major joints with carbon fiber rod and CA.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Started the R lower wing. As I went along and cut spars etc I made doubles for the L lower wing assembly also. This will make the L wing build fast and easy. I use ceiling tiles attached to a flat surface, this produces a straight warp free wing.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

After doing some research DVII's of this period used a lozenge pattern on some or all of the aircraft. Light coloured on the bottom and a darker shade on the top. B-USA distributes Solartex and they make a product called Lozengetex. I order a roll of light designed for 1/3 models. With our crappy dollar it's costing me almost $200 CDN shipped per roll......and I still need to order the darker Lozengetex for the top surfaces! Thank goodness this colour scheme uses it only on the bottom and top of the lower wing and bottom only of the fuse and stab!!
