Thanks Phil! You need to build one of these!!

I started and finished the gear assembly last night. It is a functional bungee type gear and I will be using Dubro 1/3 scale wheels. I have always had an issue with the stance of Balsa USA models. They design all their WW1 models with a wider gear to make them more user (landing) friendly, I call it the Balsa USA "squat". To eliminate this I narrowed the gear by 2", this gives the DVII a more tall scale look. The assembly is straight forward, the only really important thing here is to set the incidence (+2) on the landing gear sub-wing. I also took time to inspect all my solder joints. The wheels were mounted by soldering an oversize brass tube and washer onto the axle. This soldered inboard washer stops the gear from hitting the bungees assembly. The outer side of the wheel has a floating washer and cotter pin to keep it all together.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

A MAJOR MILESTONE! The DVII is on its wheels! To me, this stage of the build is very satisfying, it really makes you feel that there is light at the end of the tunnel! The next task will be to build the sub-wing for the landing gear. Balsa USA got this one right for sure, the assembly will be in 2 pieces and will allow for landing gear maintenance just like the full size DVII. I will have to remember that I narrowed the gear so the sub-wing will have to be modified accordingly. When finished I will fiberglass (Minwax polycrylic) and paint (latex) this assembly.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Looking good as always Scott. I enjoy following your builds and picking up tips along the way. It's going to be impressive in the air next spring. This the competition project for next year?

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Thanks Steve! I'm not sure if the DVII will be ready for the competition circuit next season. The major part of competing is not only having a great looking scale model, but also being 100% comfortable flying that model in a competition environment. It also usually takes me a few mths to get a model trimmed out and flying just the way I want it to.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Covered the rudder and got the rib stitching done on Friday night. A quick note on rib stitching, I cap the glue "stitches" with strips of 1/2" torn Solartex. The strips are torn from Solartex going with the grain. All you need to do is cut the covering at the desired 1/2" mark and then tear the strip. If you have got the grain direction right the strip will tear the 1/2" the whole length. If not with the grain the strip will not maintain its desired size. I couldn't just leave it white so I painted the black cross on it. I again used Behr Ultra Premium latex flat black.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

Started the sub wing this weekend. As I had modified the width of the gear, I had made it narrower, I needed to shorten the sub wing by 1" on either side. I also added a strip of spruce for the trailing edge to reduce dents etc. The sub wing is mounted to the gear block on the bottom with 6 plastic straps and wood screws. After drilling the holes I soaked them with thin CA. I also added some internal triangle stock to "lock" the gear assembly into the sub wing. The bottom of the sub wing is sheeted with 1/8" sheet and the top will be sheeted with 3/32". The assembly will then be fiber glassed and painted. As I stated before this whole assembly comes apart in 2 halves for maintenance and bungee replacement. The plans called for +1.5 to +2.0 incidence and I managed to get -1.8 on both the sub wing and stab! I don't think I could do that again if I tried! +1.8 on the stab is a good place to start, I like my WW1 models to fly with a nice tail high attitude.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

A quick note on stab incidence. Most biplanes and tri-plane models I have seen fly tail down, they seem to be dragging their tail around. Adjusting the stab incidence will help you get that tail high attitude that you see here in the pic of my Voss DR1. The stab on this 1/4 scale model ended up needing +2.9 to fly tail high. I hope this sheds some light on this subject.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

The inner gear assembly and wheels have now been painted. I also fiberglassed the sub wing. I used 1/2 oz cloth and Minwax Polycrylic. This made the whole assembly much stronger with very little weight gain. I will paint the insides of the sub wing and then paint the outside red when the time comes.

Re: B-USA 1/3 Fokker DVII

The sub wing has now been primed and is ready for final detail. The gear struts look wrong to me, to wide, so I will have to do a little more research on those.
