Giant scale fun fly

I built a nice BIG fun fly plane this summer for my buddy Don after he crashed his H9 Taylorcraft. It took only 20 hours from sketching out the plane on paper to the test flying. That included cutting all wood (I am a cabinetmaker, and buy my balsa in blocks and cut my stock myself) balsa/bass/ply building it and covering, and setting up the controls. It has detachable wings on a home made Aluminum spar, a paper honeycomb core profile fuse with 3/32 ply on the face, and balsa everything else. home made landing gear and of course the powerplant is an "AJ Custom Engines" 40cc home made job using a Dolmar 2.4 head/piston with my own case and shaft, C&H ignition. Total cost to build the plane was less than $200, including glue, materials and covering!

Flies really, really well at 15 pounds and allmost no coupling in controls.

Scratch building Giant Scale is WAY WAY WAY cheaper than buying a kit, and SO much more rewarding.

Buying balsa blocks

I too Like to scratch build planes as well and am right into giant stuff. You say you buy balsa blocks and cut them to size. I want to do that as well but haven't found a place to buy them [other than hobby shops who don't have blocks that are very big]. I'm talking about cutting stock 4 or 5 feet long. Thanks fo any help you can give me.

No it wasnr Kevin. I built it after Don smashed his H9 Taylorcraft in Timmins at the fun fly beginning of July, then I think we had it in Sudbury at their fun fly, and in North Bay also in August, but at the NB fun fly, the engine started running erratically (it was later diagnosed as a faulty hall effect sensor - I had a spare but didnt think to change it at the FF) on the first flight so no one really got to see it perform.

After we got home, I changed the engine's cylinder from the 2 cubic inch (33cc) Dolmar to the 2.4 (40cc) Dolmar I had (I made the engine, bar stock ccase) and Don had quite a few flights on it before we stopped flying for the season. It sure flies great, and hopefully this summer it will be with us on the "fun fly tour" in Northern Ontario.

If you have any Hollywood types around there filming, you can sometimes pick up a load of balsa. Y'know, the stuff they smash up in fight scenes....

Not too likely in Kirkland Lake... although they did film a cheesy movie here when I was in high school, starring Megan Follows of "Anne of Green Gables" fame - I dont recall too many chairs being smashed in that one...

Balsa is amazing stuff - each time I work with it I am still amazed and think what the tree would be like, and how the heck it supports itself. Wood is just so neat!

Balsa Blocks

Hi guys: Thanks for the tips on finding block of balsa. You've made me think there's a big live theater in Edmonton I'll have to get hold of them. Accually maybe 20 years ago my Partner and I did a fair amount of work for them - moving seats for different plays and the odd set. Thanks for jogging the old grey Matter.
