OK, building time is here, and this build is now on the go. I'll post some pics later tonight, but started with the fuse. Minor differences in the upper fuse from the AT-6 to the Zero, but with the instructions and swapped out parts, it's a no-brainer. I'm glad Top Flite went this route, removing any unnecessary AT-6 part, and replacing with the Zero mods. Makes it a simple build. Super impressed to with the die-cutting of the ply parts, they fell out of the sheets, very clean cuts. A nice surprise.

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

So cool man. Looking forward to the pics. Lots of them.

Do you have a power system in mind?

I personally would throw a 6S electric with an OS 40 or 50 brushless- (amazing) at it, but that's just me.

Of the million or so sport and scale kits that I've built, its funny that I've never put a Top Flite bird together. Gonna have to remedy that one day. OK, maybe it just feels like a million.

Anyway, what do you figure, have it completed in a week? Haha...

Enjoy the build...

W

Did I mention more pictures...

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

I've got several planes powered with the RCGF 20cc gassers, love them, so going with that. Really great on my TF Corsair, suspect will be the same with the Zero. Have some nasty American warbirds to pounce on next spring, so need all the edge I can get!

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

Yesterday I managed to frame up the upper fuselage half. The kit comes with the standard instruction book for the AT-6 Texan, and an additional book with the Zero mods. Top Flite recommends annotating the Texan book, at any point where you need to switch over to the Zero mods. On the top half of the fuse, the mods are simple, with replacement instrument panel, and a couple of extra bulkheads that cover over the aft portion of the cockpit. Rest is straight forward TF construction. Parts fit has been excellent so far. I attached the 3/8 balsa fuse top this morning, and it requires a pile of work with the hand plane, and sanders, to shape. The wood selected wasn't ideal, being soft on one side, and much harder on the other. Something to note during wing construction, a lot of flyers forget to laterally balance the model, or wait until it's pretty much completed, and end up requiring a pile of weight, or worse, a pile of trim! Keeping an eye on the balance throughout the build will avoid those issues.

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

Upper fuselage is all sheeted, and sanded. Next, I'll build the tail feathers, and get the horizontal stab attached to the fuse, prior to completing the bottom fuse.

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

Jeez. I'm showing my age. I remember my dad taking me to see TTT when it was released in the theathers. It was awesome. By then I was already a hard-core warbird fan.

The movie that really started me off on the path to being a warbird fanatic was The Battle of Britian. I saw that with my dad when it was first released. I think I snuck into the theaters with my older brother 3 or 4 times that same year to see it again because i could not get enough of the battle scenes

Re: Top Flite Hollywood Zero

Battle of Britain rocks, have the original in DVD, and the re-mastered colour version as well. Definitely my fave for warbird movies.
