Some half descent setups would be:
GY401 w/ 9253 (recommended)
GY401 w/hitec HS525
GY240 w/hitec HS525
Telebee 701 w/HS525 (can usually be bought used quite cheap)
On the other hand, mechanical Gyro's like the JR120BB works great, the Futaba 153 works well. Just run a large Battery, they pull a fair bit of juice. The HS525 is a high speed servo housing a 5 pole motor. Great centering and a good choice for the tail. Hitec 425BB's are good for cyclic, collective and throttle on a budget 30 machine.
As for HH (all the above) and rate (120BB,153, huge difference for the first 1/2 dozen flights!!!!!
HH is great for hovering, backwards flight , 3D and flying in the wind etc etc
GY401 and better have the option of switching between rate and HH via the TX. GY240 (great Gyro, will last and work very well in all your ships) is pilot selectable. Switch located on the Gyro allows you to switch between. 99% leave it in HH full time.

Great resale on the 240

I started flying my concept 30 with an Airtronics non ball bearing gyro (sgx I believe) and a standard 94102 (actually a 94103 servo that comes hardwired to the gyro but it is a 94102 with 5 wires) servo and that lasted me many many years. I decided once I started doing aerobatics I wanted a dual rate gyro, bought one of the Century dual rate piezo gyros for about $120 Canadian. It workd GREAT! Cheap, low consumption and seems to be very rugged.

Nothing wrong with the mechanicals!!!like I pointed out but I'd go with a used Telebee for under 100.00 dollars before the Century. The Century is just a dual rate piezo.
