The FT Explorer is a great trainer. I build this one for my father in law and he learned to fly in no time.

Re: Foam Spitfire /hurricane

The FliteTest Spitfire is a pretty staight forward build and if you build it straight with the recommended electronics, will fly like it's on rails and perform like a hot sport plane.

A buddy of mine who was new to the hobby, picked one up at a garage sale (just needed a receiver and battery) for $10. After two flights on a buddy-box, he was able to fly it solo. He had been practicing on a flight sim all winter, but the plane was stable enough that he could use it as a trainer.

After a few weeks, he was "flying it like he stole it"... (which he practically did) and occaisionally the corn (at his farm) would reach up and pluck his Spit out of the air when he was flying a high speed, low level strafing pass. I was surprised at how much glue and duct tape that plane could actually carry into the sky.

Bottom line: The FT Spitfire will provide you with lots of fun for a very reasonable investment. They look/fly great as a belly-lander and you can make a pretty scale looking canopy using a dollar store 2 litre pop bottle.
