MORE "how to sneak in new Kits"

First off, let me say I have been out of the country this past week, so I am now just getting caught up on the news here at RCC. This how do you get your new toys in the house thread brought me back to a time about ten years ago. This is a true story. And will demonstrate just what some of us modelers will go through to keep our loved ones happy.

It was late in the flying season, I had been on strike for almost 4 months. My good friend, flying buddy and at the time club press was living just down the street from me. We often flew together as well as went out shopping. So to speak.. As to not incriminate anyone in this tail, or here at RCC.. Ill call my friend Ron M.

Anyway, I awoke this one fine morning, and while having a look in the newspaper came upon an add that said. Model Airplanes for Sale. I gave the number a call and found out it was a friend from one of the other area clubs who was also on strike and having a hard time of it. Not having any cash at the time I thought of good old Ron M. Gave him a call to see if he wanted to check it out.

Off we went later that day. Got to the gentlemans house and sure enough, there were several deals to be had. Ron M opened his wallet and started a buying frenzy. When all was over, he had himself 2 or 3 new forty or sixty size models along with a real nice Great Planes 120 size Cap 21(remember that Snap Cap Ron?)

It wasnt until we were on our way home that the reality of his spending frenzy set in. He looks at me and says How am I going to get these things in the house? Of course wanting to help in anyway I could, I suggested the store em at my place till the coast is clear routine. He thought about it, then said I dont think the wife will buy that one, when she sees them being unloaded at your place >>>> remember I was on strike and had no money for models.

After driving a bit further, Ron M realized the smaller airplanes could be brought in without to much notice and complaints. But that big Cap was another story. Anther mile or two down the road and a smile came upon his face that I have never seen on any individual before or since. He said I have a plan..

Enter the accomplice.

At this time I should tell you that a mutual friend of ours (Rob) was trying to get a small hobby shop of the ground in our small town. (Caledonia) Unfortunately it didnt last, but was a big player in this scheme.

When we got to town, we went in to see Rob. Told him of our good fortune and our dilemma. Ron M asked if he could hang the Cap 21 there until the cost was clear, and he was able to get it in the house undetected. Rob being a good Jo thought this was a great idea, maybe even good for the business he was trying to get off the ground. It all sounded good to me and I would have been happy with that, but Ron M had given this more thought than I had.

Thinking a head, he knew that sooner or later the wife would see a new airplane hanging around. Like most modelers Ron Ms wife doesnt understand the need for more than one airplane, and as he had a hanger full, why did he need another. That is when I heard Ron M further explain his plan to our accomplice Rob.

As Christmas was not that far off, only a month or so Ron M said, if you can get it up in the window, Ill make a big deal about it next time the wife and I drive by. Im sure she would love to buy it for me for Christmas. I couldnt believe my ears. I humbled at his feet. Only a man that really cared that much for his wife and family could come up with such a plan.

A couple a weeks went by and I noticed that Cap was no longer in the front window of the shop. I asked Ron M were it was? He told me his plan was working like a charm. Rob had called him the day before to tell him he had sold his Cap 21 to Rons wife. That he should stop by and pick up the cash she had spent on it. ($100 if memory serves).

That Xmas morning I got a call from Ron M about noon. He said come on over for a drink and some Xmas cheer. As soon as I got there, I couldnt help but notice under the tree was that Cap 21. A nice ticket on it that said to my darling husband love Mrs. Ron M. Ron held it up to show me, and at the same time praised his wife for his gift. The look on her face was one of pride. What a great wife she was in getting such a terrific gift for Ron M. Then Ron tells me he knows where there was an engine that would fit right in that Cap, that he could have for only a $100. (And I knew right where the $100 came from Too!)

Not many of us will go to this length to keep our love ones happy. This story is true, I swear on a stack of bibles.
Any similarities to our RCC member Ron M. May or may not be coincidence.
Im sworn to secrecy.

What a great plan, wish I could claim it as my own. If I can keep my wife from reading this story I may get exactly what I want next Christmas. And a few extra dollars too...
