So you're probably asking O.K. so what are you doing in the heli forum. Well helis are actually my first love and after 27 years of flying them I have now stepped into the turbine powered version with a JetCat "HotCat ".
Having been flying the turbine powered jets for the last 7 years I have become well versed with the politics of the MAAC and AMA and turbine powered anything in the Canada and the U.S. Here are a few considerations for those MAAC members that currently operate turbine powered helis.
BE ADVISED THAT WHILE YOU DO NOT REQUIRE ANY WAIVER OR SPECIAL INSURANCE TO OPERATE YOUR TURBINE POWERED AIRCRAFT ( JET OR HELI ) IN CANADA YOU ARE REQUIRED TO OBTAIN A SPECIAL " LETTER OF PROFICIENCY " FROM MAAC IN ORDER TO OPERATE YOUR HELICOPTER AT US AMA FIELDS AND SANCTIONED EVENTS.
You must also abide by all AMA rules while at attending events in the US which means the helicopter power unit must conform to the AMA's approved list of turbine power units. At present ONLY the PHT3 and HP5 units have received it. So, what this means is if you do up your own homebuilt design or other YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OPERATE IT IN THE U.S. REGARDLESS.
So, some of you may be asking....how do I get that " Letter of Proficiency" Well, that is now becoming an issue in the jet area as more and more MAAC members acquire turbines. This has not yet been the case in the heli sector....but is starting to happen. I suggest that you contact MAAC direct or the MAAC Helicopter Chair in obtaining the Letter. Remember YOU MUST PRESENT THIS LETTER TO THE AMA CD AT THE EVENT OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO FLY!!
It would sure be a drag to drive hundreds of miles to an event and find out that you can't fly. Best wishes all and hope to see you at this years upcoming heli rallys!
