Fire extinguishers..

There is a good thread happening at RCU about fire extinguishers. There are obviously some misunderstood information being communicated about which type is best to use.

There was a Fire Extinguisher tech servicing the extinguishers in our building, so I took the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions. I'm glad I did.

Halon extinguishers are still legal in Canada - except in boats. However, and a big however, the Halon is not composed of perfect inert gases. One of the component chemicals when exposed to heat above 675 degrees Farenheit will breakdown and produce Chlorine gas - a deadly poison. (which is why it is illegal in boats with their enclosed engine rooms). This temperature is well below the normal operating temps of our turbines and certainly well hot start temps.

Also, dry chemicals used in extinguishers are extremely corrosive. The fellow showed me his aluminum step bumper which is exposed to the chemicals from recharging the extinguishers, and it was well corroded....something to keep away from turbines.

That leaves CO2.....the only downside is that the fog does contain solid CO2 - dry ice, and that could have themal effects on the internal components. However, of the three, it seems the safest choice...

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you will have to catch up.

Carburetor fires in cars we use CO2, as it causes less damage (already bad situation).

Dry chemical can as you say actually do more damage.

I carry a 5 pound CO2 extinguisher with me (for the jet, but it is allways in my airplane trailer) and have a dry 2 pounder in my flight box for the gassers and glow (just in case!)

Had to use my CO2 last summer for a brief moment to put out some dry grass in Timmins when my jet ran off the dirt runway into the dry stuff and sat nose up on its ass.

Got to have the safety "tools" ready boys!
