... fuel metering carburetors... What are they? Compared to what other type of carburetors....? What are the others called?

I am pretty sure a fuel metering carb is a standard "two needle" carb that uses a separate low speed needle to meter the fuel as the barrel closes, unlike an airbleed carb which merely allows a fixed volume of air to enter the carb when at idle - the main needle staying at a fixed setting.
