Hawk Attack

Now that June is here and the hawks are hatching there may be a few issues. When a hawk gets in a dive position above the plane, go full throttle and pull up. The hawk must pull up also and will break off the attack as they slow up. Then they will climb as fast as possible to gain altitude above so they can dive again, now is the time when they are gaining altitude to get out at wide open throttle, but keep an eye out for the next attack and repeat the same procedure. Be prepared to land as close as possible and run to your plane and stand over it as they may hit it on the ground. This procedure saved my planes a few times when I was a horse pasture pilot. No we did not shoot the hawks, we backed off and flew else where. But as the young hawks took to flight their territory increased.

Re: Hawk Attack

I've heard that performing a loop will cause them to break off an attack. I guess it's a maneuver birds can't do?

Did have a case last summer where I had a small flock of birds (Starlings maybe?) following my umx Spitfire. Kinda fun for a while, until I did a loop. Then they lost interest and flew off.

Re: Hawk Attack

I'm up soaring with them all the time around here and never had an attack.

Re: Hawk Attack

Do you soar near a nest?, if so be on guard as some day it will happen.
