General motor question

I have taken it upon myself to design and construct a custom center console for my car.

My plan is to make a part of that center console a hidden holder for my tablet. I will use a hydraulic arm from on old car trunk or hood to have the tablet lift out of the console.

However, I do not have much experience with motors and do not know what type of motor could do what I am envisioning. What I would like to happen (in an ideal world) is have a motor that will move the hydraulic arm between one of three set locations by use of a switch or button.

Thank you all in advance for any helpful input.

Re: General motor question

Probably best to use a linear actuator.

Re: General motor question

Perfect, that is exactly what I am looking for.

if I wanted to use two linear actuators with position control (or memory) and have 3 settings, could anyone draw me a diagram or schematic detailing how to achieve this? (by diagram or schematic I mean how I would have to wire this/what equipment I would need.)

Objective: push button 1, it goes to position 1. same deal with buttons 2 and 3.

Thanks (:

Re: General motor question

The schematic would be pretty simple with just the three buttons you describe and could be easily done with micro controller like Arduino. The chip can be programmed to act like a radio control receiver and the linear actuators have built in ability to respond to these signals.
