Today I took out my AC-2, the plane I designed and built two summers ago, its in my avatar (picture under my name).

I am running a Brison 4.2 gasoline engine with a C&H igntion. All last year ran great and I had no issues with glitches or rough running.

Today, the first time I took it out this year, I checked it all over, did a running range check before take off and everything seemed fine. Very shortly into my flight, the plane seemed to be "jittery" but unlike a radio glitch, it just seemed hard to trim and the engine was running quite roughly. I set up for landing, and upon bringing it in I could see the rudder flipping back and forth about an inch and also the ailerons were jittery. Again, not like one bad hit but a continuous jitter.

At first I thought what could it be and looked at the receiver to make sure my vertical whip antenna was plugged in - which it was.

Then I remembered reading in the C&H instructions that if you dont hook up the ground wire in the ignition cablle to the engine it can still run but cause interference.

I bent down and looked at the plug cap, bang on! The ground wire had broken, probably from a years worth of flying and I will now check it out every few flights. After reattaching the wire I flew again, with excellent results and it was definitely the problem.

For those using an electronic ignition - check that ground wire!
