Slow and steady I'm still working on my debonair i have everything ( material ) but the spars. My plane has only cost me $7.00 Cdn. so far  but i cannot find any metre sticks that are worth buying their all fancy and over 6 bucks. If i have to buy them it will wreck my cheap SPAD costing around 26 bucks. Can i use any other material for the spars????

Hi Norm
If you check out the local lumber yards you will find finished wood products that are approximately the dimensions of a typical yardstick in 8 foot lengths. If you choose carefully you can find one or two that will be straight enough. These are usually in the section with quarter round and other mouldings. The other possibility is to get to someone with a planer and/or joiner and have him run you off some to your dimensions. There are always a few woodworkers around that are willing to help out.

Good luck with your debonair. Mine was a treat to fly.

Norm, I used 4 peices of 1/10" funiture ply and 2 peices cut as dihedral braces, I had laying around with pink Styrofoam sandwiched between them.

Has worked great for mine. Well my son Cody's I should say!

Here's a pic.

I have the same problem as you. They are to expensive so I did what dave did. Bought a 14' of spruce trim 1 1/2x3/4 which it has some splices, but they wouldn't be in the spar. Pick and choose so there is only a couple of splices and you get the rest with good grain. I then put a guide on my bandsaw and rip it lenthways so they are about 3/16" thick by 1 1/2". I think it cost me about 14.00 but I have a lot of spars.
It has worked for me.

I purchased a piece of 2"X3" clear pine 4' long at Home Depot and ripped it length ways and then cut them to about 1 1/8" wide which is yardstick size. Got about 14 pieces for $2.80. Also they sell 1/8" X 4" poplar 4' long for about $3.00 and is only one easy cut to get the yardstick size spars.

Make friends with a guy like me (woodworker/furnituremaker) I will cut all the basswood spars you need...

I imagine some local woodworker would be a nice guy and cut up some pine or basswood for you?
