Yes, do try the old fuel now that you have the engine running.

Even if you find the old fuel doesn't run great, you can probably use it for breaking in new glo engines (with keeping the glo plug powered perhaps).... and, as a last resort it can be used for cleaning/flushing out glo engines during maintenance.

btw, my understanding of extending the shelf life of glo fuel is to keep temperature of the environment in which is stored stable, not leave the jugs uncorked for longer than necessary... so that you lessen the amount of water vapour that gets precipitated as moisture into the fuel....

I used a half gallon cool power that was four years old in 32 degree celcius in an O.S .46 FX with no problems. I believe you were running engine to lean, plus it sounds you had other issues. Older fuel can give you some slight differences in performance ,but generally speaking will continue to run the engine.
