landing gears issue

hello guys
i was looking for new idea to prove the landing toughness!
some of you guys came up with good ideas but i would like to share my experience with you guys.
here is my short story and experience,

I have spent so much time and money and try different material with different procedures of making the shaft and hardened it in different ROC (hardness level) after machining,

because i don't like to fly with solid landing gears i would love to have control on gears...

the latest and best result of all my experiments is landing gears made of steel called (1018 ) which is perfect to give it shape and machine it if is necessary then harden it up to 40-45 ROC, this is the level of hardness that center of the shaft stays soft which provide you flexibility and the skin of the shaft or outside diameter gets hard around 2 to 2.5 mm deep which provide you the toughness...
perhaps hardening must be done by professional which cost me $60

now i have it on my p-51 mustang 77" i did more than 10 flight so far hasn't deformed and i don't see any crack so far, even i landed as hard as i don't crash but nothing happened to my 1018 landing gears yet.

Re: landing gears issue

Are you stating the entire gear leg, or just the short stub between retract and strut?

I have used a few different materials, the most successful coming from hardened drill rod or even the base shanks from worn out drills of the correct diameter. In either case I am looking for strength, but basically just enough to allow it to bend before transferring damaging energy into the mount structure. Would rather replace the pin than rebuild the wing.
I know there's money in aviation........I put it there!

Re: landing gears issue

I would rather have a soft steel landing gear which easily replaced or straightened then have to repair the wing structure. One of the keys to a strong landing gear is Learn
To Land.
