Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
It is just a kindly suggestion that John might have not considered yet. I'm sure he has but just in case.....

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
I was working on the wedge block when I took another look at the gear. Seemed like the cap was a little loose and I was able to work it looser... when I removed the set screw holding the tiller to the shaft I was in for a surprise - another set screw!
With that out the cap came off easily, and I could access the C-Clip. Dad gave me this set for Christmas years ago. I think this is the first time I've used it. Sure was glad it was in my toolbox! With the gear apart I took a few minutes to clean out the mounting block and outer shaft bore and apply some fresh grease. Also, the outer set screw I removed was cheap and in rough shape. I cut a socket head cap screw to length and tapered the end like the original to register in the inner set screw. Gear on the front with the desired forward rake. While it's true that it may prevent the use of a wraparound Pitts-style muffler, I can always use the stock one. And I can always change it back. |

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
When I was at my LHS yesterday I was pleased to find that my second elevator servo had come in. Time to splice in some extensions.
Here are the extensions, ends stripped and tinned. Servo wires cut. Both servo splices complete. Wires routed through the horizontal stabilizer. Trusty fishing rod in place. String loop around servo wires. Feeding the wires through the fuselage. I made a notch underneath to create a path for the wires. I'll cover that later. Horizontal stabilizer on and glued in place. I double-checked the alignment before leaving it to cure. Fished wires up front. |

I discovered a couple of other things today. One, you can distribute cabinetmaker's glue with a small syringe. Two, you can create a nice bead with your little finger.
Got the hatch covered too. |

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
Nice looking rake to the nose gear....about perfect in my book. Funny that we didn't notice the C clip ; no venture no gain. Was wondering how much clearance between the DLE20 engine and how were you planning on mounting it.. inverted or sideways. Looked at page 1, I think it was and noticed that the motor has rail mounting vs standoffs and a rear mounted carb. You are doing a great job.

I must not have mentioned it, but the DLE 20 is out of the picture. Someone pointed out that in the RC Guys demo video their plane, powered by a Zenoah 20, is running full out a lot of the time. I figure something at the top of the recommended range would be better. So it's a DLE 30; I have both the stock muffler and a wraparound Pitts-style. |

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
I was just wondering if you have checked if the firewall is in a scale position as it looks to be a little more forward than scale (from what I can see on the pictures...). Maybe that would explain why the nose gear is designed to be installed behind the firewall on your model contrary to the full size Cessna.
Very interesting building thread by the way. Alain

With the wraparound muffler does that put the can behind the cylinder ? One other question on the replacement socket head bolts you used on the trailing links on the nose gear ; are they threaded all the way or did you use bolts with a solid shaft with the last bit for the nut. Ask me as I found out the expensive way as the threaded portion chewed up the holes in the aluminum in short order making for lots of slop. Last edited by stegl; 11-02-2015 at 10:00 AM. |

Not yet... but someone did mention that on another forum. I will check into that; I think it's more important to have the gear in the correct position (ie, the scale distance from nose to tail) so if the situation merits I will move it back to the rear of the firewall. Glad you are enjoying the build. Quote:
Pretty sure the wraparound muffler will not fit with the gear in its current position. Of course, that won't be a problem if the proper scale position is on the back of the firewall. Quote:

Re: Cessna 150 by RC Guys - my build thread
Don't feel that the "scale position" of the firewall is relevant , as it is covered by the cowling. Unless you run around and fly it with the cowl off. Wouldn't worry too much about that scale part as in that case the single cylinder inverted engine is more non scale than worrying about the firewall.. LOL.. Another advantage of nose steering being further forward will minimised any added weight for balance if required. if you go with the steering up front then stock muffler would have to be used...... Your choice.
the all threaded OEM bolts for the links were used for economy only. If thread touches the aluminum; in time you will see what I mean. |
