I think 'CafeenMan' has it about right. Same reason I take the tongue-in-cheek pot shots at ARFs.

I tried to get my son and some of his friends interested in modelling. Other than an interest in crashing them, as soon as they saw there was effort involved in getting one off the ground the interest was lost. I tried gliders and rubber powered models but this was "way too simple". Much like theri interest in video games; first-person shooter games preferred to anything requiring you to solve a problem. Truly a testament to the instant gratification generation. Very sad.

Still, as with our generation, there are a few sharp cookies around who are driven to "nourish their noodle". These ones will enter the hobby regardless of what we do to encourage them, the rest, we may encourage to "wander through" our hobby as they seek the next cheap thrill.

Dave Platt

Well, I know Dave and can say from my personal experience this issue about kids I really think has been taken out of context... Dave is indeed very passionate about modelling in general, as well as a life long modeller well known for 'NOT' being very subtle when voicing his various views on modelling. If anyone of any age ever meets Dave Platt at a scale meet or jet meet and strikes up conversation about 'any' model related topics you will be hardpressed to find a more enthusiastic, passionate, informative and helpful guy...

What goes around comes around, by encouraging and supporting our young kids into the hobby its future is assured... simple really!
just my 2c worth of course

I in no way meant any disrespect to Mr. Platt. Just wanted to give my stance on kids and the hobby.

Not all kids will be interested in modelling, just as many of my friends were not, as I was growing up with the hobby.

My point, plain and simple was/is that there ARE still kids out there that would kill for the guidance, assistance and comraderie of a mentor. I have proven that time and time again to myself. If you take a stance like some I know, who actually DONT want kids in the hobby, then what??

I know if I wasnt taken under a wing when I was young, I definitely would not be doing what I am doing today in the hobby, thats for certain.
