Appreciate the comments Scale Guy, particularly those on competition and not being good enough. This seems to be a common theme among scale builders. Another one is that "I don't like competition". Yet these same folks will drive miles to show off their model at a mall show or fun fly and then take great pride in all the attention they receive. Boy, if this isn't competition, I'm missing something.
We have tried to set up the contest so that it would accommodate a wide range of skill levels and have a relaxed atmosphere. The local experts have offered to help those that are new to competition. It has not seemed to make much differrence.
It seems like if you are willing to take a risk, you join in and have fun like you did. Good to hear that you tried and had a good time. Makes it a lot easier to do it again win or lose. Winning does not seem to be the important thing, it is how well you have done relative to your previous performance and the comradery of people who like scale airplanes and have a passion to make them fly like the real thing. If you are risk adverse, you go to a fun fly and talk about your accomplishments.
Someone once told me that the world is made up of three kinds of people, those that watch, those that follow, and those that make things happen. I guess most scale modelers belong to the first group.
