Bar Sander
Remove this ad - become a site supporter!
Hi All
I've been using 3 1/2 in. rolls of sandpaper from Can Tire and cutting pieces to fit my bar sanders, I don't mind doing that and I'm sure they sell the proper sandpaper at the hobby shops but my only problem is that I've been using Spraymount adhesive which is very hard to remove afterwards, I use paint thinner which is also very hard on your hands Someone told me to use UHU sticks, I tried but it didn't stick very well, not on that sandpaper anyways, does anyone know of a better adhesive? Thanks Gaston B. |

adhesive for sticking the sand paper to the bar sander?
i just used double sided tape, a guy told me to try, i had my doubts, but it worked fine for me. it's just tape that looks like scotch tape but is double sided, and i used it on my 11inch aluminum bar sander. no problems yet, it's been a month or more with fairly light use.

Canadian Tire actually sells a heavy duty double sided tape that has a type of fabric as a backing. It comes in 2 inch wide and works great. The best thing with the heavy duty with the fabric backing is when it comes time to replace the paper it all peals right off in one piece.

Hi
I really appreciate the help guys, now I know what to use and where to get it, just to show that you can always learn, no matter how old you are, unlike my wife who has been 29 for the last 30 years' I'm more like 60. Thank you very much. Gaston B. |

Plain old rubber cement, available at stationary stores also works very well. Spread a thin layer on both your bar sander and the back of your sandpaper, let dry till tacky (only takes a minute) and press the sandpaper on to the bar sander. It sticks really well and the sandpaper can be easily peeled off when its worn out. Any residue left on your bar sander can be easily rubbed off with your fingers. A 125ml bottle is only a couple of bucks and will last a long time.

Gaston,
I use 2" wide double sided carpet tape. You can buy it from most places. I have (3) 4ft. alum. channels and it is easy to mount. John

Like Vulcan1 said, it is called carpet tape. I usually cut it into pieces and stick it on the sand paper first, then peel off the other covering and then place it on the sanding bar. This tape is micro thin and won't leave any raised bumps through the sandpaper and when you have to change paper it easily comes off.

When I sand bars, usually use a 6" dual action orbitial sander, unless it is finish sanding when the sander of choice is a 1/4 sheet palm sander. Andrew, correct me if I'm wrong, but you would probably use the same...
Actually, have been using roll sand paper from the hobby shop. Another alternative for sticking sandpaper to sanding bars would be to use a single coat of spray contact cement (such as 3M 77). Has anyone ever tried it for this use Wade

ArGus
I have used 3M SprayMount, I find too hard to remove the sandpaper and you have to use paint thinners to clean the bar sander afterwards, if 3M77 is easy to clean up, it would be perfect. I just came back from the local Home Hardware store an bought 2in. carpet tape it was $5.69 for 42 ft. I should be good for a little while. Gaston B. |
