On to all of the tedious tasks. I couldn't find a heli muffler for a Webra Speed anywhere, so I found a 60 sized one and made an adapter plate to make it fit. Covered the blades too. On to radio installation and control rods.

So Dave , on that old style bird can you do auto's etc or is it before the time of the driven tail? Just curious as I only got into heli's about seven years ago.

Re: X-Cell 60

Driven tail was an optional addition but did not need it to auto. Look at my avatar. That Xcell was autorotated countless times!

Re: X-Cell 60

Ya, I've done some autos on it. I'll never forget when some spectators from the oil patch stopped by the field to check it out. One asked me if I chopped the throttle, how fast does it come down. So I chopped the throttle forgetting that I didn't have the trim up and I killed the engine. He said he felt bad because he thought he had just coaxed me into crashing it, then I set it down about 10 feet from me, gentle as can be. The X-cell does a really nice auto. Not sure about my gasser. At 16lbs, it might auto like a rock. Then again, a lot of mass in the rotor to keep that head spinning.

Jim as mentioned above they auto fine ,actually better as you do not have the drag of the tail blades. The wind could play a little havoc on you if to strong and trying to do a smooth 180deg auto . The tail just weather vanes if forward movement is maintained, the heli is steered with cyclic.

HAL9KPCM the X-Cell is looking great , I had a bent frame for a short time with an OS and a U pipe many years back.

Re: X-Cell 60

A little bit closer today. While the radio is all in but not fully set up, I had to see if the engine would start. Had it running for about 2 or three minutes good and rich. The blades were off and I let the head spin up a little bit. Nothing too fast, still easily stoppable by hand. That old Webra (was still new in box) has a lot of compression.

Re: X-Cell 60

I just realized that I almost have this thing ready to go, but I don't have a field box. Never needed one for gas helicopters. I lucked out and found the Hobbico Ultra Tote on Amazon for $15.41 with free shipping. I'm pretty sure that was a pricing error, but they honored it anyway. My daughter figures I put way too much effort into a pretty finish on a tool box.

Re: X-Cell 60

So, did you fly it yet?
I finally purchased an engine and pipe for my retro build and am about to start assembly on it today.
The SHAG thing really sucks for an actual heli event. I see there is a Heli event in Winkler Manitoba this weekend which is almost 1/2 way between us "extra" hour for you though. A few of us from Ontario are going to the event.

Re: X-Cell 60

Not yet, hopefully this weekend. I got the engine dialed in nicely with a ridiculously low yet completely stable idle and still a quick snap response to the throttle. It should be ready to go. Didn't know about the event in Winkler, so unfortunately I have other plans already.
