Why does sheeting foam wings scare the crap out of me? When I see you making it so easy...

I know that the next plane I build I will have to do it, I will be asking lots of question.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Hi Rick, stay tuned I'll be sheeting the wings in the next week or so. It can be intimidating when you know that everything is literally riding on that 1/16" thickness of balsa and the bond between it and some foam!

I think the little trick of notching a Timmies card to evenly spread the a Gorilla glue really helps. You get a consistent amount of glue over the whole sheet which foams and penetrates down into the top layer of foam beads. I'll try to take a bunch of pictures of the process.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Yes Gord, take lots of pictures please. The last time I sheeted a foam wing many years ago was with contact glue and it did not turn out well. Since then I have always shied away from foam wings and preferred built up wings. But now if I am to build the plane I would like to it will have to be foam wing cores etc...

So, please, lots of pictures!

Thanks Guys! Al, I might be looking at the big brother of this one for next winter's build.

I haven't seen the MAAC cover yet... I definitely have a face for radio!

Gordon,

That can be arranged. The great thing about doing all the design and cutting in house is we can constantly tweak the kits for better building and performance. We have made some of those both on the 3.1 Extra and the MX.

Its from guys like you that give us feedback that we can constantly make improvements.

Here is an example: many know we use to do ARF's. We have a local customer with and older 3.1 ARF. We made him a set of MX wings for it a couple weeks ago. Unbelievable improvement the way it flys. Its a different airplane. It just has better performance through the whole flight envelop.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!! we'll be looking for that cover shot!! LOL

Al

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Trimming the canopy always makes me a bit nervous but it's really not too bad. It's just a matter of marking the first cut line about a 1/4" further out than you eventually need to get to and then slowly, carefully mark and trim it down to the final shape. I use a pair of Lexan scissors that I had from my R/C car racing days [Alan, let me know if you want to use them].

The monokote arrived! - two 25' rolls
