I sanded 1/4" all the way around the inside of the canopy to give the glue something to grab onto. The canopy was then washed in warm soapy water and dried (I hate seeing fingerprints on the inside of a canopy in areas that you can't get at Arrrgh!) Before applying the glue (LePages "100%" glue) I did a rehearsal with my lovely assistant! This really is a two person job if you want to prevent getting the glue smeared all over the inside of the canopy

Once it was set in place, some masking tape and 3/4" sticks clamped to the sides will hold it all in place until the glue sets (30 minutes clamping time with full strength in 24 hours)

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

I was really happy with how the canopy turned out using the LePages 100% glue! I'll let it cure for a full 24 hours and then get started on fiberglassing the canopy hatch. The wheel pants have a nice gel coat finish but one of them was pretty beat up. There was a crack on the side, a crack on the bottom (where the two halves join) and a big crack/delamination at the tail end. A little epoxy and heavy weight cloth fixed the cracks and I mixed up some Icing to fill the hole at the tail end. I should be able to get a coat of primer on them tonight.

I'm not sure why the picture won't load but there is not much to look at anyways

Here is the picture from the previous post along with today's pictures of the canopy/hatch getting a layer of .6 ounce fiberglass. Z-Poxy finishing resin (as per Dave Platt's method). Tomorrow I can give it a light sand and then put on the 'flow' coat of resin. Nice and light and tough.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Looks great as usual Gord! I keep meaning to ask you, so here's the perfect chance; which do you prefer? Eze-kote on top of the fg or the Zapp fg resin method? I bought some Eze-kote to try but also have the Zapp fg resin and debating which to use for my PAU canopy? Is Eze-kote easier to work with or leave fewer pin-holes?

Thanks Gord!
Travis

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Hi Travis, I have used both methods and normally I would have used Eze-Kote. Eze-Kote is easy to use, quick and easy to clean up (water). I used it on the canopy/hatch of my Dalton. Over the years, I've had a couple of bubbles show up on that surface. It may have been due to exposure to gas from the underside (I had a very minor gas leak last year) or perhaps it was just from extreme heat and humidity on those sunny days down in Muncie LOL. I decided to go back to the Z-Poxy for this application but I'll continue to use Eze-Kote for most surfaces.

Can't wait to see your new plane!

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Awesome, thanks for the thorough reply. I think I'll try Eze-kote this time as I've never used it and seems very easy to flow compared to resin that I normally use for fg repairs. Thanks Gord. Covering is ordered and just going through a few minor repairs and asthetics.

Travis

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

BTW, and you might already be doing this, but since you're working on the wheel pants, here's the best method I've found & used for years for making wheel pants last a long, long time. Or maybe it'll help someone reading this build thread as well.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Thanks for that Travis! It really does help when you support the outboard side of the wheel pant like that!
