Ok, I'll go with the landing gear idea and tapping the blocks. Not that I'm going to change but its not a bad way to do it if you have those occasional landing mishaps!! LOL!!

By the way, NCE WORK!!

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Thanks Al! Like I said before, I know the stock aluminum angle brackets work well. I've just gotten used to the Carden approach (I even used it on my Dalton - don't tell Tony LOL)

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Coming along great Gordon!!! I think this one is next on my list. Leaning towards the 3.1m version with a ZDZ180 on pipes.

Reading every detail on your's and Alan's builds. Keep posting and highlighting the details - very useful for us.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Thanks Trevor! The thread is getting a fair number of views but not a lot of comments so I'm glad that somebody is getting something out of it LOL. Depending on how I like the flight characteristics of this plane I may be retiring my Dalton next winter and building the 3.1 competition series version as well... Overall, the quality of the kit materials is very good and any questions or uncertainty from the instructions are easily addressed by a text or phone call to Kevin and Al.

I spent last night working on a rear pipe mount and the hatch to get into that area. I'll post some pictures tonight when that project is done. Just to show you the level of support from JTec: Kevin offered to help design and draw up the pipe mounts. I was comfortable doing it myself but this would have been invaluable help for a guy who doesn't have a lot of building experience!

JTec!

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

So, it took three different designs for the rear pipe mount but I've got what I want: light, solid and reliable.

The first version (not pictured) was a complicated affair that had an upper arm that screwed onto the lower support structure. I realized that there were too many glue joints that could fail and leave the rear of the pipe banging and rattling around. The second version is shown in the first four pictures. It had the virtue of being light and simple but I decided that I didn't want to rely on the silicone fuel tubing to hold the pipe securely in the mount. The fourth picture also shows the pattern for the hatch cover which will be cut from 1/32" ply.

The final version (the last two pictures) came to me first thing this morning and it is simple and robust. By using the former (which happened to be right where it was needed) I could screw a simple clamp down and snug the pipe in place. If I needed to remove the pipes, all I need to do is remove the hatch, unscrew the two clamps, and the pipes are free.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

I like it!!!

I have been mulling over how to make it easier to start with the canisters but have the option of (easily) changing to pipes later on and this system will work great!

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Ya, it would be easy to cut out the hatch at any time and put in the rear mount. The centre mount would be a little trickier but doable after the fact.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Didn't have a lot of time tonight but I managed to install some 1/16" balsa sheeting (just above the tuned pipes) that will help protect electronics from the exhaust pipe heat. I also glued in all of the stringers on the bottom of the fuse.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Got a fair bit done this weekend. Added some blocks and cut a 1/8" liteply plate for the tail gear wire to exit. The open area will be covered over with monokote. Having this area covered over with monokote was Alan's idea as it will keep the oil and dirt from building up in all of the nooks and crannys if it was left open.

The open area around the main gear was filled with some balsa and I added some 1/8" sq. balsa as backing for the 1/8" liteply exhaust cooling plates that will be installed soon.
