The lower corners of the fuselage are sheeted and the material supplied for this task was pretty firm. To make things easier to work with, I like to preshape the balsa before gluing it in place. I lay some wax paper over the fuse to protect it from the wet (Windex) soaked balsa that is taped down into position and left to dry for a day. Once the tape comes off, the pieces hold their shape and they are easy to work with when doing the final trimming and gluing.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

While the glue was drying on the corners I started to work ahead and cut out all of the control horns blanks that Alan and I will need. They are cut from G-10 on the bandsaw and will be finished in sets of two with some file work in a vise.

I also made the inserts which will be used to recess the hatch bolts into the side of the fuselage. Made from some dowel with a G10 plate glued on the bottom. The dowel is drilled to allow the head of the bolt to go in and the G10 is drilled to only allow the threaded portion of the bolt go through. This will make more sense in a few days when they get installed. BTW, the G10 control horns and the recessed canopy hatch bolts are not part of the kit. It's the custom touches that really make building fun!

The bottom of the plane is finished after fitting and gluing in the 1/8" lite ply plates to cover the tuned pipes but still have lots of cooling for the pipes.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

I really like the way you opened the bottom of the fuse for cooling on the pipes.

Also a great job on the control horns, that's the way to think out of the box!!!! but a lot of work. We actually can make life a little easier with something similar and we did the work. LOL

Here is a link to one of our webpages: http://www.jtecrc.com/composite_control_horns.html

It's great to see those idea's. Really like the way you build

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Thanks guys, doing it this way results in the bottom plates being flush with the edge of the corner sheeting. It's a little more work but a nicer end result.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Before using epoxy to glue in the wing tube phonelic, I used the wing and stab tubes to confirm that they are both still parallel. The tube was tacked in with CA and then some 30 minute epoxy was mixed with Cabisol to make a stiff, Hysol like material that stays where you put it.

The vertical fin was checked for alignment with a square clamped to the top of the fuselage and then glued on with Gorilla glue and lots of tape to hold it in place.

Re: JTec Radiowave MX2 2.8m Build log

Looks great Gord (and Alan too)!! Very nice work as usual.

Just curious, it looks like solid ~3/8" ply sides on the motor box from the pics. Any "cutty cutty" to be afforded there? I've noticed some significant motorbox weight savings from my new 123" PAU Extra 300SP by removing some large triangles of material here. I know in your Dalton and most Cardens they often save some weight here as well. The firewall & lg plate are another great place to lose a little fat as you know, though arguably overkill.
