OK, I know this site is usually for r/c stuff, but I have a real problem with a scale model, ie, trying to find an inexpensive way of controlling an electric motor:

I built a 1/4 scale Greyhound bus, electric powered. I have the motor (36v), I have the batteries, I have the mechanical drive all sorted out, but I CAN'T FIND A CONTROLLER! Well, yes I can, I can pay $600 for a Curtis or a golf cart controller, but the whole project hasn't cost me that much. I have a 5hp Briggs & Scrapiron that I could put in there, but it wouldn't sound right at all.

Does anyone have a simple, non-rheostat way of controlling this? Even some kind of soft-start arrangement would help a lot. My problem is that I have no idea of electronics, and all the horror stories I hear about how easy it is to blow mosfets, and how a capacitor can really bite you, leaves me a little cautious about building my own. I have a plan from the UK, but there isn't an electronics supply place within 80 miles of me.

Help! Please?
