Managed to get a cool book for $1 at the Shearwater Aviation Museum, featuring carrier borne aircraft. Nice detailed drawing of the cockpit, and location of all instruments and controls, as well as a skeleton shot showing all the internal structure. Compared the panel shot to online panels, everything matches up. The ply panel that comes with the laser cut kit is a bit off, as is the plastic panel that comes with the cockpit kit, but with a bit of bashing, I'll be able to make a very accurate panel. I'll post pics of the progress tomorrow night. Like to get the cockpit done, then mount the rudder and elevator servos, run wires, then I can close in the fuse underneath, and get to some glassing.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

As mentioned, neither the wood instrument panel supplied with the short kit, nor the plastic one from the cockpit kit are completely accurate. A bit of kit-bashing ensued. The plastic center panel is fine, so cut that out, cut the holes for the instruments, fit everything, and then painted the panel, flat black. With that done, I've attached the ply center panel, after cutting out things a bit, to add stiffness, and then glued that to a new ply backing. Next, plastic sheet was cut, to match the panel shape, instruments sorted out, holes drilled to match those I'd drilled into the ply, and the plastic parts are now painted and drying.

Lessee:

- Airspeed Indictor: check!
- Altimeter: check!
- Turn & slip: check!
- Awesomeness Indicator: missing!

Oh right, that one was pegged at maximum anyway

Looking good.

Robart called today (alas, I was out). They have shipped the correct part, and say I should hopefully have it in a couple of days. That's as much info as they provided. I assume that means a replacement gear... but could mean a different chain or who knows what.

Been dealing with a bit of a crisis today, going to try and get time to call them back tomorrow.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Good news. We're going all out on the instrument panel and cockpit, with work ongoing on the gun sight, oxygen bottle, interior paint, etc, many pics to follow.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

As promised, some shots of the cockpit bits under construction. The rudder pedal assembly consists of cast resin, vacu-formed plastic, aluminum tube, rod, and a set of springs, all of which require some cutting and fitting, and then paintwork. Also underway is the painting of the side panels, fuel tank top, foot rails, cross beams, and radio and oxygen control panels. Lots of small sub-assemblies, that once together will hopefully add considerably to the overall look. A good warm up for certain, for all of the exterior detailing.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

A couple of shots of the assembled rudder pedals, and one with the foot boards, for reference.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Replacement parts from Robart arrived today! They sent replacements for BOTH left & right sides, which certainly exceeds what I expected.

Re: Jerry Bates F4F Wildcat

Perfect, great news Kevin, gear teeth look right, so once I've got those, I can expedite finishing the gear installation, air system, etc. Once everything's figured out for the front end, then I can fuel proof from firewall to cockpit, get the rest of the fuse sheeted, and get going on the glassing!
